Rules and Regulations

Event Schedule

  • Saturday, November 9th
    • 9:00am – 2:00pm – Masters Round Robin
    • 3:00pm – 8:00pm – Open Round Robin
  • Sunday, November 10th
    • 10:00am – 2:00pm – Masters Semi Finals & Final
    •   3:00pm – 7:00pm – Open Semi Finals & Final

*Matches will start immediately at indicated start time

*Teams are welcome to come warm up between 8:00am-9:00am (Master’s) and 2:00pm-3:00pm (Open) on Saturday, and between 9:00-10:00 am (Master’s semi-finalists) and 2:00-3:00pm (Open semi-finalists) on Sunday. 

Tournament and Match Formats

  • 4-10 players per team
  • Teams can be mixed, all women or all men.  The following Advantage Points will be used
    • 8+ points WS v MS
    • 8+ points WD v MD
    • 5+ points WD v XD
    • 5+ points XD v MD
  • Ties are best of 4 matches: 3 doubles / mixed doubles & 1 singles with a golden set if there is a draw
    • GoTies are best of 4 matches: 
      For the open category it will be: 3 doubles / mixed doubles & 1 singles with a golden set if there is a draw
      Golden set for the open category will be 1 set to 21 points; singles or doubles.  Coin toss to decide if both teams do not agree on the event
      For the masters category it will be: 4 doubles/mixed doubles. Golden set if there is a draw.
      Golden set for the masters category will be 1 set to 21 points; doubles or mixed doubles  Coin toss to decide if both teams do not agree on the event
  • Each player can play a max of two matches per tie (excluding the golden set)
  • The same pair cannot play twice in the same tie
  • Standard Badminton Rules apply.
  • Best of 3 games, Rally points system to 21 per set (Cap at 30).
  • Coaching is permitted at 11 pts interval and between sets.
  • Players are to officiate their own games, and Control Desk’s decision is final.
  • In the case of a dispute, please seek support from the Control Desk.
  • If applicable, Control Desk’s decision will be the final.
  • Out of respect for players, we kindly ask spectators not to be involved in score keeping, line calls, or being involved at all.
  • In the event of a forfeit, withdrawal, or no show, the players in question will be disqualified from the tournament.
  • In the event of an injury:
    • Immediate Match: If a player sustains an injury during a match and is unable to continue, that match will be forfeited in favor of their opponent.
    • Future Matches: Should the injury prevent the player from participating in any future matches within that tie, those matches will also be forfeited.

Tournament Tie Scoring

  • Win: If the team has won 3 or more matches, they are awarded 3 points
  • Loss: If a team has won less than 2 matches, they receive 0 points
  • Golden Set: If a team draws 2-2 to go to a golden set, and then loses, they receive 1 point
  • Default matches are recorded as 2-0 win for matches and 21-11 for games.
  • At the end of the Round Robin, standing is determined by the number of points.

Tournament Rules

  • When the tournament issued shuttles are finished, teams / players must provide their own tournament grade shuttles for the tournament
  • Warm up time is 2 minutes – starting when the match is announced
  • Players will be defaulted if they cannot be located for their match (5 minute buffer after being called)
  • Maximum 90 seconds break between games, and 60 seconds at 11 point interval.
  • Matches will not be officiated – players are to resolve any issues among themselves
  • Coaching follows Badminton Canada rules (behind court allowed, between points only, etc.)
  • All Masters players must be at least the age of 35 years old by Dec 31, 2024. CAN Sports Tournament Committee reserves the right to request government-issued ID to confirm ID and eligibility of any players on the day of the tournament.
  • All teams will be seeded at the discretion of the Organizing Committee.
  • Captains are required to confirm player attendance 15 minutes before the start of their first tie.
  • Captains are required to submit their line-up 15 minutes before their tie.
  • All players are required to play in at least one match in order to qualify for Semi-Finals and Finals.

Entry

  • $500 – Team Registration Fee
  • Entry deadline: October 11th, 2024

  • Entry fees include 1 tube(s) of shuttle for each team and a tournament t-shirt for each player. 
  • All entries are FINAL as of the entry deadline.
  • Refunds will NOT be issued for any withdrawals after midnight on October 11th
  • Withdrawals made before the entry deadline can be refunded (less administration fee of $50)
  • The only method of payment that we are accepting for this tournament is via e-Transfer from a Canadian Bank. No other form of payment will be accepted.

**Team entries will be registered in the order they are received  (Time stamp on the email). 

Should the tournament become full and we are not able to make alternative arrangements, we will refund your entry in full.**

Note: Shirt size will not be exchangeable. We cannot guarantee shirt size if you change after the entry deadline.

Dress Code

Shoes with non-marking soles must be worn; no outside shoes inside the gymnasium

Protective eyewear is recommended

TOURNAMENT WAIVER & RELEASE OF LIABILITY

​By registering for the tournament, players agree and give permission to be photographed and recorded during the tournament and to be used in the public to promote CAN Sports and tournament sponsors. Furthermore, all participants assume all risks, damages, and loss that they may incur during the tournament. 

Players below the age of 19 years old on the day of the tournament must also register Full name and contact information of their guardian.

All players must be at least the age of 14 years old on the day of the tournament. Organizers reserve the right to request government-issued ID to confirm ID and eligibility of any players on the day of the tournament.
